Description

The site is now home to a one-story, seven-unit, flat-roofed strip mall owned by Allen A.M.E. Housing Corp. The building houses several businesses, but Mandalay’s specific address (114-16) is now occupied by Attocs Electrical Supply, LLC. The unit’s facade faces north easterly onto Merrick Boulevard. The facade has two main entrances, both of which are glass store-front doors with rectangular transom windows above them. One door sits at the unit’s south-most side. The other sits at the unit’s north-most side. Between the doors are four identical windows. They are rectangular, fixed windows that are taller than they are wide. All four windows and both doors are covered in advertisements for Attocs Electrical, meaning you cannot see into the building. Above the windows, there is a rectangular illuminated sign that reads “Attocs Electrical Supply,” as well as the business’s phone number and website URL. The sign features a white background with red and black accents.

Detailed History

Newspaper evidence suggests 114-16 Merrick Road was, at one point, a mixed-used building. For example, an article published in the Long Island Daily Press in July of 1935 noted that a liquor license was awarded to an unnamed establishment at this address, pointing to commercial use. However, an article published by the Long Island Star-Journal on May 24, 1949, announced that Herbert Gordon, of 114-16 Merrick Road, had been reassigned in the foreign service from Sydney, Australia to Taipei.

A deed dated January 31, 1984, lists the first party, the seller, as Vincent M. Albanese and the second party, the buyer, as Allen A.M.E. Housing Corp., the current owner. Property records indicate that Allen A.M.E. Housing Corp has rented the building to several businesses at various points in time, including B & C Travel Agency Inc. in the 1990s.
