Detailed History
Kozy Korner Tavern This tavern is listed in the 1949-1953 Green Books at 10th and Castle Streets, Wilmington and identified in the student report as no longer standing. I believe this is true, but more research may be warranted. The 1947 and 1948 City Directories list the Cozy Corner at 919 Castle Street as a beer seller. This building stood on the northwest corner of 10th and Castle Streets, as confirmed by the 1951 Sanborn map. By the 1952 City Directory, however, the Two Spot and Rosebud Café businesses took occupancy of this address while a new establishment, the Kozy Korner Grocery, is listed at 1001 Castle Street, on the northeast corner of the intersection. This building was formerly occupied by at least one other grocery store. None of these businesses survive into the 1956 City Directory. Today, the former grocery building still stands, while the tavern does not. Were they related establishments during the Green Book years? Or did the later Green Books simply reference a tavern that had gone out of business? —Andrew S. Edmonds
