Detailed History
Chautauqua tavern This tavern is listed in the Green Book along Chautauqua Avenue, Durham, but the student report places the tavern definitively in a residence located at 2212 Chautauqua Avenue (owned by James Steele). I am uncertain how they came to this clarity, as the City Directories do not mention a tavern along the two-block street, nor does the truncated 1950 Sanborn map display a commercial building. Perhaps the students associated this address with the tavern because it is the only surveyed property along the street in the website Open Durham? If anything, the tavern might have been located at 2309 ½ Chautauqua Avenue, where there was a grocer, Willie Parker, listed in the 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1955 City Directory. Prior to that, in 1948, it was listed under the category of "confections, ice cream and retail". The students' Final List identifies the tavern as demolished. It is unclear to me whether it is demolished or extant. —Andrew S. Edmonds
